Our Relationship with Food

For many of us, our relationship with food, what we eat, how and when we eat is complex.   The relationship often follows the patterns of our family and relates back to some of the beliefs we gained during our childhood.  Food is essential and food is a fuel our body needs but it’s important to recognise that we can put in good quality fuel and it will work well or we can put in cheap, nasty, polluted fuel and it stops running.

Statistics
We all know the statistics too; they are screamed at us from all forms of social media, the TV, the radio.  In the England in 2019, it was estimated that 28.0% of adults were obese and a further 36.2% were overweight but not obese.   My guess is that this has risen due to Covid-19 lockdown too.  There are endless diet plans out there for us to try, some supported by the government, others which have been around for many years.  So why is it, that we are not a nation of slim, healthy people?

The Risks and The Benefits of Weight Loss
And what about the risks too?  Research has shown that even a 5% drop in your body weight can…..

  • Improve your sleep – you sleep better and sleep longer.
  • Improve the condition of your skin – eating less unhealthy foods has a big impact onyour skin’s condition as you swap these for healthy, nutritious foods.
  • Improve your mood.  Eating healthy, nutritious food can help to reduce stress and anxiety.

On top of these benefits,  you will have more energy and because of all these positive changes, your confidence will increase too.  You will reduce your risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure and you reduce your risk of having a stroke.

So, with all this positive information and the knowledge that losing the excess weight will be good for us, why do we not do it?

The simple answer is that diet’s which severely restrict calorie intake or have us eat in ways that are so rigid and do not suit our lifestyles do not work in the long term.  We are able to “diet” in this way for a short period but it is not sustainable.  Also, the more we deny what we want, the more we want it.  This leads to a difficult situation where we are constantly thinking about food and wanting all the foods that the “diet” does not allow.

How Hypnotherapy can Help
And not once have we examined the cause of why we eat the way we do.  Working through hypnotherapy and with an experienced hypnotherapist, you can deal with the issues that you have with food and with the aim to create new habits and behaviours to change your relationship with food.  There are tools and techniques which we can utilise to make these changes and make them “stick”, thus creating new healthy behaviours.  The key part of the solution is you and your desire to make the changes.  What are you waiting for?
